| Vandemere: Dutch "Village by the Sea" The Village of Vandemere may be small in numbers but it is rich in local culture. Historically the site of a Native American village. Vandemere is steeped with pirate lore, and rich in maritime traditions. Today the sleepy little hamlet is home to several fish houses and local fishermen still troll the waters for their livelihood and pleasure. The land is picturesque in its own right, with thousands of acres in cultivation. Charming farm cottages, some a century old, dot the well tended fields. With Pamlico Country's rich soil comes bumper crops of soy beans, potatoes, cotton, and corn. The Location of Vandemere is very conducive to traveling the waters of the ICW. Take a tour of Vandemere Creek and you will see several large sailing yachts, and fishing trawlers docked there along with smaller fishing boats. By water, the Atlantic Ocean is a short 26 miles by water and about 1hour by land. The infamous Ocracoke Island is just due east only 30 miles by boat, along with historic Portsmouth Island. There is no need to drive through the hustle and bustle of beach traffic to find a nice sandy spot for fishing or sunbathing. All along the shores of the Pamlico Sound and Bay River there are beautiful beaches, some of them with crisp white sand. |
